Do Newborn Photos Take Long? A Real Newborn Session Timeline Explained

Newborn baby being photographed during a relaxed newborn photography session in Bunbury.newborn-photography-duration-bunburyDiscover how long newborn photography sessions in Bunbury take, what happens during the session, and why every newborn experience is baby-led.

One of the most common questions I receive as a Newborn Photographer in Bunbury is:

"How long does a newborn photography session take?"

The answer is that every baby is different, but most newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, flexible, and completely baby-led.

At Carien Lee Photography, I never rush a newborn session. Your baby's comfort and safety always come first, which means allowing plenty of time for feeding, settling, cuddles, and nappy changes along the way.

How Long Does a Newborn Photography Session Last?

Most newborn sessions last up to 90 minutes, depending on the package booked and how settled your baby is on the day.

Some babies sleep beautifully throughout the session, while others need a little extra time for feeding and comfort breaks.

The goal is never to rush through poses but to create a calm experience that results in beautiful, natural images.

What Happens During a Typical Newborn Session?

Arrival & Settling In

When you arrive, you'll have time to settle in and get comfortable.

The studio is kept warm to ensure your newborn feels safe and relaxed throughout the session.

We'll discuss any preferences you may have before we begin photographing.

Family & Sibling Photos

If your package includes family portraits, we usually begin with:

  • Parent and baby photos

  • Sibling portraits

  • Family photographs

Completing these first allows younger children to relax once their portion of the session is finished.

Newborn Setups

Once family photographs are complete, we move on to the newborn portion of the session.

This may include:

  • Wrapped newborn poses

  • Beanbag poses

  • Prop setups

  • Close-up detail images

My goal is typically to achieve two beautiful newborn setups, with anything additional being a bonus.

Feeding & Comfort Breaks

Babies often need:

  • Feeding breaks

  • Nappy changes

  • Cuddles

  • Settling time

This is completely normal and expected.

These moments are built into every newborn session, so there is never any pressure if your baby needs extra attention.

What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep?

Many parents worry that their baby won't sleep during their newborn session.

The good news is that beautiful photographs can be captured whether your baby is asleep or awake.

Awake babies often provide:

Every newborn session is tailored to your baby's individual needs.

Why Newborn Sessions Can't Be Rushed

Unlike other types of photography, newborn sessions require patience and flexibility.

Babies don't work to a schedule, and that's perfectly okay.

Allowing enough time ensures:

  • Baby remains comfortable

  • Parents feel relaxed

  • Beautiful images are created naturally

  • Safety always comes first
