There's a small but important part of every newborn session that clients don't always expect — and it's one of the reasons sessions run so smoothly.

After we finish the family portraits, I ask parents to take a seat in a designated spot in the studio while I take over the wrapping and posing of their newborn. It's not because I don't want your help — it's because this simple shift makes a genuine difference to the results.

Why it works better this way:

• Calmer baby, calmer room. Newborns pick up on movement and energy around them. When parents step back and the room settles, baby settles too — which means softer, more natural sleepy poses.
• Safety stays front and centre. Wrapping and posing a newborn safely takes both hands and full concentration. Having a clear, uninterrupted workspace means I can focus entirely on supporting baby's head, hips, and comfort at every stage.
• A smoother, more efficient session. With a consistent routine, sessions move at a relaxed pace without unnecessary back-and-forth, meaning less time under the lights for baby and less waiting around for you.
• Parents actually get to enjoy it. Instead of hovering, parents get to watch their newborn being transformed pose by pose — often commenting it's like watching a little bit of magic happen.

It's a small studio rule, but after years of newborn sessions, it's become one of the simple habits that consistently leads to happier babies, better images, and a more relaxed experience for the whole family.

One of the sweetest sessions to come through the studio recently was baby Isaiah — who arrived with the most incredible full head of hair. He was an absolute delight to photograph and made for some gorgeous portraits.
